If it ain't broke, don't fix it!

Location: Main Engineering
Ltjg Hex'EL D'Gracefull, currently the senior Operations officer, headed down to Main Engineering, He did not want to work there, but most of his equipment was maintained by the people who did work there. It was a delicate balance, trying to push, prod, beg, cajole, whine, and make promises to get your stuff worked on. There was always a long maintenance list of things that needed fixed or adjusted, sometimes replaced. This maintenance list that he had was over 200, some items just needed adjustment, some were scheduled to complete overhaul. His job was to make sure the equipment needed to keep the ship working and safe, was up and running when they needed it. Ltjg Hex'EL was a firm believer of if it ain't broke, don't fix it, touch it or mess with it in any way. Starfleet Corps of Engineering had a different take. They wanted to poke, prod, and inspect everything... all the time. Ltjg Hex'EL preferred to used non-destructive testing to see if there was a problem, that and sensor analysis. Walking into Main Engineering, he headed over to the big pool table that showed the status of the warp and propulsion system. Waiting for the XO / Chief Engineer to get rid of his constantly flowing crowd of engineers and technicians that were constantly approaching him with some critical tidbit of information. Seeing an opening, Ltjg Hex'EL rushed up and said "Excuse me sir if I might have a moment of your time, maybe over lunch, to discuss the operations department equipment maintenance scheduled worklist. That and as XO, I am your brand sparkling new Operations officer."
Yadira looked at the young officer who pushed his way through the crowded pool table just to get to her. "My new Operations chief? Why of course, I need a break from all the confusion. Give me a second", she said. Turning around, "HOLD YOUR MOUTHS!"She yelled and the noise stopped. You could hear a pin drop in the silence. "Now listen up, you all have your duty PADD's and you know what I expect. If you can't figure it out then you call me". Shaking her head, she turned to the Lieutenant, "Now I understood you said something about lunch? I am famished," she finished saying.
Ltjg Hex'EL said "Yes mam, If you have time, and can stop craking the whip, for a few moments!" Ltjg Hex'EL smiled as he said this to let her know he knew how it was, while the cat's away, the mice will play, and you can expect to get what you inspect. The theory of crew management has evolved over the years, but it basically boiled down to trust ... but verify. As they walked out of Main Engineering, Ltjg Hex'EL started to wish he had taken the time to do a little research on the XO / CEO, just so he would not put his size 15 feet in his mouth. She looked human, so that was a safe start. He always felt uncomfortable around Klingons because if they felt insulted, they tended to settle it right then and there. Ltjg Hex'EL said “This is going to take a little getting used to. I have twice the people as I had on my last command, but 20 times the equipment to operate, that and staffing the bridge with the best personnel and trying to not upset any of my prima donna’s. How is Engineering compared to a smaller ship?”
When they arrived at the mess hall, Ltjg Hex'EL motioned for the CEO to order first, then he ordered a big tray of turkey, mash potatoes, gravy, stuffing, sweet corn, Yams with sweet sauce. Knowing he was going to get a look at his big tray of food, Ltjg Hex'EL said “I am blessed or cursed with a high metabolism and am always hungry. I am a bit jealous of Starfleet Engineering coveralls, due to their excess in pockets, we Ops types have to look good while on bridge watch, and somehow that translates to lack of pockets.” Having said that Ltjg Hex'EL walked over to the table with the CEO and waited for the CEO / XO to take a seat before he sat down.
